The objective is to create accessible education and employment pathway for 25 Black learners to become credentialed Early Childhood Educators in 24-months. Saccae is leading 3 components of the project: assess and amplify current curriculum and facilitate professional development tool hackathon for educators; develop a micro credential course; curate a cultural tool share.
The Early Childhood Education sector faces persistent challenges to recruit, train and retain diverse ECE practitioners. Studies reveal gaps in Ontario, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area, and the underrepresentation of BIPOC educators in permanent and leadership positions (Abawi (2021), Abawi and Eizadirad (2020), Abawi (2018), and Turner (2015). This is compounded by racialized violence and discriminatory interactions with staff, students, and families, detailed in the Ministry of Education's study of the Peel District School Board. In response, more parents and community members are taking action to increase equitable access and representation.
